At The End of The Week

BOBO JELČIĆ

Eight people are about to finish their working week and retire to the comfort of their living rooms and sofas. They deserve a little peace. They arrive from their permanent jobs which secure them good income; the entire week they have been trying to keep afloat and advance in something. On Friday afternoon they have finally reached that moment only for themselves. Their lives follow a stable routine and time passes painlessly. However, the times are odd. They live in a country where old ideas of togetherness have recently been ruined, the new values have not yet been established and no-one knows how long this will last. They find themselves in lives that were not lived by their parents and everything is a journey into the unknown. There has never been more uncertainty; so their slight nervousness is not surprising. Each one of them must create himself/herself and situate somewhere.

They try to relax and mingle, be together, pretend that everything is fine and leave a good impression. However, while the outer pressure is decreasing, that inner one is expanding. It might be more difficult at the end of the week than it is at the beginning. The free time becomes claustrophobic and unfulfilled wishes and small daily disappointments appear in the empty space.

These are not big issues, but are in abundance and are still swelling; it is becoming more and more difficult to act interested and relaxed. Soon the bourgeois salons begin to demonstrate their downside; the inner disorder takes over the arrangement. The inhibitions and scruples begin to give in and something in them is breaking down. Thus, small disappointments turn into serious things.
