Ti regalo la mia morte, Veronika

Traduction et adaptation de Federico Bellini et Antonio Latella

tiré du film Veronika Voss de Reiner Werner Fassbinder

I give you my death, Veronika marks the second meeting of Antonio Latella with the poetics of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, after the mise-en-scène of The bitter tears of Petra von Kant in 2006. The starting point of this new work is not a theatre text of the Bavarian author but rather a part of the cinema oeuvre that Fassbinder consecrated to the representation and study of women. Starting from the history of Veronika Voss, one of the latest protagonists of his works, the play reveals some of the main female characters through which the director was enabled to offer a great and unique work where the cinema perspective and the biographic approach inevitably tend to coincide. A crazy escalation, no protections, a lengthened hallucination blending reality and fiction.

That’s how we get into Veronika’s mind, the mind of a decadent diva given morphine by some unscrupulous doctors; here, memories and evoked characters turn into black and white visions, where black stands as the perfect shape absorbing the other colors and white stands for purity and mourning. Thus, the white of morphine turning memories into gratifications, distorts perceptions until death becomes acceptable as an opportunity or a relief. It is a journey through which Veronika and the other Fassbinderian heroines offer their sacrifice to their creator, to the director, to the doctor but also executioner Fassbinder, who is, in turn, the protagonist of his own drama.
