The Misunderstanding

Concept of the Performance:

The Misunderstanding explores the fundamental impossibility of authentic communication, especially with those closest to us. Bobi Pricop’s production transforms Camus’s existential tragedy into a haunting meditation on isolation, transactional relationships, and the predatory individualism of contemporary society. Using large lateral screens projecting obsessive close-ups of the actors’ faces, the performance becomes a visual poem of emptied meaning and eroded humanity, the very collapse of language itself. The brutalist-industrial scenography evokes a cold, rain-soaked world where a mother and daughter dream of southern warmth, their utopian longing turning into a justification for murder. Through Jan’s tragedy, killed by his own mother and sister who fail to recognise him, the production interrogates the masks we wear in our social roles and the superficial differences we allow to divide us.

Artistic Statement :

The Misunderstanding remains a fundamental landmark of twentieth-century theater, a play that compels me to return to it again and again. This play speaks about a permanent fear of not being recognized, of not being truly seen, about a burning desire to communicate authentically, to be « understood » especially by those closest to us. The characters are like children searching for their place, for love, for acceptance, but who experience only lovelessness, abandonment, rejection. The Misunderstanding refers to the limits of communication with the other, how much we understand, how much we desire to be understood, a permanent state of anxiety that seduces you into believing happiness is always elsewhere.
