Biography
Iggy Malmborg’s main artistic interest is to use the performance event as a model onto which the pieces discourse directly can be applied. Since 2014 he is producing a longer cycle of works which is diving into the theatrical machine, taking it apart and analyzes each element separately; amongst the works are Physics and Phantasma on phantasy and SATAN on illusion, in 2026 he premieres the concluding piece of the cycle entitled Sortiestycken, a work on endings. 2009-16 he was also one part of the theatre-duo White on White. Over the years Malmborgs works has gained international recognition and been celebrated for presenting a complex intellectual discourse in a concrete way, filled with humor and warmth. In 2023 he made his first work in Swedish, the series Försök #1-3 [essays/attempts] for Gothenburg City Theatre and in 2025 he premiered Mot Slutet his first work directed to children.

#1 Essay on the actor’s paradox
Concept of the Performance
#1 Essay on the actor’s paradox is a monologue where the actor describes his coming actions, how he is to perform them and what strategies he is using to make it authentic. Meanwhile he is reflecting on repetition, on what it means to do the same action over and over again, both on stage and in the gruesome everyday life. What is seen is a choreography and a text that is slightly out of synch, where the audience hears about the coming actions, allowing for the imaginary to produce an image of it, just before they are to see it. The actor seems trapped, in a never ending loop of performing theatre as well as daily routines. The spectators can view the methods of how it is made in the most concrete way, as the same monologue is performed twice, immediately after each other.
Artistic Statement
This piece is the first in series of three, made for the Gothenburg City Theatre. During the autumn 2023 I inhabited its small stage to make work – a kind of micro-plays – with the steady ensemble, entitled ”Försök” [attempt/essay]. The common dominator with the pieces is that they are all a study of dilemmas built into the theatrical machine, the first on repetition, the second on relations, the third on time. The idea is that by studying the technique of acting, other predicaments in the human condition would be render visible as well. They are all done in extremely short time – two weeks of rehearsals and performed three times only; a way of challenging the way I usually work which is the exact opposite. By doing so the attempt was to find a more impulsive, direct approach to our material and thereby making something that is insecure and vulnerable by nature.
