Rosie Sommers & Micha Goldberg
Country: Belgium
NTGent / Kunstenwerkplaats
Biography
Rosie Sommers (°1995) and Micha Goldberg (°1983) work at the intersection of theatre, performance and collective creation. They met at Volksroom, the mythical off-space in Brussels that formed a generation of performance artists and theatermakers.
Together with Simon van Schuylenbergh they created the cult performance AGAINST EVERYTHING (2019). In the same year they participated in Ne Mosquito Pas, a performance platform around failure, guilty pleasure and bad taste. Out of this collaboration, the concept of GERMAN STAATSTHEATER took form. Together they explore collectivity, emotion and failure as engines of creation. Their work moves between humour and gravity, structure and chaos. The work premiered in 2024 at Les Halles des Schaerbeek during the prestigous It Takes a City Festival.
In 2026 GERMAN STAATSTHEATER will tour in the Netherlands and Belgium. Meanwhile Rosie & Micha are developing their new creation DRAMA, in collaboration with Dutch theatercompany De Warme Winkel and Kunstenwerkplaats.

GERMAN STAATSTHEATER
Concept of the Performance:
In GERMAN STAATSTHEATER, a group of performers will take you on an energetic and performative journey. In Hochdeutsch mit Variationen and through an incessant slapstick of overwrought bodies, they explore what community and solidarity can still mean in the individualistic and success-based society we live in.
Theatremakers Rosie Sommers and Micha Goldberg (Ne mosquito pas) delve into the traditional German staatstheater, a theatre form distinguished by its monumental character, traditional production logic and the staging of socially relevant repertoire pieces. The expressive theatricality and the gigantic group of actors on stage spark Rosie & Micha’s imagination as a kind of symbolic counterpoint to their own theatrical practice.
GERMAN STAATSTHEATER is a tornado of panic turned into humor and self-mockery, ultimately showing the power of community. Here, theatre is a place to celebrate ‘wasted’ energy, in the form of exuberant fun.
Artistic Statement
GERMAN STAATSTHEATER originated from Ne Mosquito Pas, a performance platform that explored failure, bad taste and guilty pleasures. From that collection of individual solos grew the desire to build a collective language, a group work that is at once chaotic and cohesive. The piece begins from our imagined version of the Deutsche Staatstheater, a monumental productionsystem with a big ensemble and exaggerated emotions. We connect this idea with Sianne Ngai’s “ugly feelings”, like envy, paranoia, anxiety, irritation, animatedness, disgust and sublimity. These emotions resist catharsis but are rich in performative potential. Within these tensions we search for actions, languages and bodies that create something new together, a theatre that inflates and reinvents itself, where failure, collectivity and emotion exist on equal ground.
