Biography

Alin Uberti (born 1997) is a theatre director and author based in Bucharest, Romania. Upon finishing his studies in contemporary theatre directing, he wrote and directed “romeo&julie2022” in Divadlo pod Palmovkou in Prague, Czechia, as part of the FACE to FAITH Creative Europe project. He has hitherto directed over 15 performances in just 4 years, ranging from street or site-specific performances to conventional theatre stages. In 2024 he directed “Take Now With You” in Jam Factory Art Center, Lviv, Ukraine and “on the back of the photograph, lower left corner, lies written everything I can’t forget about my mother”, a performance made for touring that was played in New York, Berlin, Warsaw, Madrid, Rome, Milan, Lisbon and Paris. In 2025, together with Ukrainian dramaturg Liuba Ilnytska, he coordinated “SONLab” a theatre laboratory for young theatre practitioners in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Dictionary for Revolutions is his first musical.

In an attempt to stage a generational manifesto that is both catchy and politically engaged, Dictionary for Revolutions fuses the singing and dancing of musical theatre with the dramaturgical structure of dictionary definitions. Using one word per letter from the Latin alphabet (words such as abuse, genocide, neocolonialism, xenophobia) as structural milestones that tell the story of a group of nine students that spontaneously decide to occupy their classroom, initially to fight back against the sexual abuse suffered by one of them, their protest quickly becoming an international movement, a Derridean principle of deconstruction is applied to the performance’s text, turning definitions and etymologies into collective tools of transformation. Thus, the spoken text, music (pop, rap, reggaeton), choreography and set design portray how the nameless characters reclaim the language, movement and physical space originally meant for regimentation, only to redefine them into instruments of resistance, unshackling, hope and celebration.
