Biography

Andreja Kargačin (*1999) is a Serbian theatre director, dancer, choreographer and author. Kargačin graduated from the Ballet School in Novi Sad and graduated theatre directing at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. She is a member of the artistic-activist collective Shock cooperative / Led art and co-founder of dance collective ČETA.
Her work is interdisciplinary, politically charged, and deals with collective memory, totalitarian regimes and gender roles. She participated in exhibitions and residencies throughout Europe. She worked as a performer in Marina Abramović’s exhibition The Cleaner.
With DORA or Who’s Going To Stitch the Vests, she participated at Wiener Festwochen in 2026.
In 2023, Kargačin received the Novica Tadić Award for the poetry collection Slobodni dani Elene Čaušesku, and in 2024 the Iskra kulture Award for her work. She directed HOLOPARTIZANKE (2024), At the Inland Sea (2023) and Brooklyn and Cats in Dumpsters (2021), and created performances and installations.

DORA

“DORA or Who is going to stitch the Vests?” is created in the context of Serbian student protests. It is based on letters exchanged between director Andreja Kargačin and Dora A., her childhood friend, an activist in political exile following charges of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order.
Exile is an attack on the freedom to protest and express oneself, and also on one’s sense of identity. The performance seeks ways for Dora, whose documents have been confiscated, to become present in places where she would be arrested, and attempts to restore the voice of a person whose voice was criminalized. It explores how art and friendship can transcend Dora’s situation, correct the wrongs, and “overthrow” the constitutional order.
The performance consists of an exhibition, a section based on the letters, and an improvised section developing parallel with Dora’s court proceedings. The performance also has a lawyer on stage
