Josué Mugisha
Biography
Josué Mugisha is a Burundian stage director and choreographer. After studying performing arts in South Africa, he faced a crisis of « expression » in his home country. He then developed a language of abstract and poetic imagery to escape censorship.
He continued his training in directing techniques at the Labo ELAN of Les Récréâtrales (Burkina Faso), in Central African dance techniques and the Acogny technique at the École des Sables (Senegal), and at the Ankata Center of Serge Aimé Coulibaly. Today, he is developing a project aimed at documenting and writing down the techniques invented during experimental sessions he conducts with his company in Africa and Europe, for which he won a Prince Claus award 2024.
He has directed around ten theater and dance productions, including « Les rassérénées » awardee of “Des mots à la scène”) and La première danse politique (finalist of “Danse élargie 7th edition”). He has also performed as an actor and dancer in several productions such as Plaidoirie pour vendre le Congo, directed by Aristide Tarnagda (toured in Europe and West Africa), and East African Boléro (toured in Europe and East Africa), choreographed by Wesley Ruzibiza.
