Romain Beltrao
Biography
French-Brazilian artist whose practice lies between choreography, performance, and discourse, exploring in-between spaces — across cultures, languages, genders, and disciplines. They work through translation, memory, and digression, creating situations where text, image, gesture, and sound intersect and reconfigure, focusing on how we tell individual and collective stories and how these open up multiple modes of listening and fabulation.
Their works — Légende (2017), an investigation of a fictional language of birds; Dobra (2021), an experiment on dubbing; and OFF (2025), a spectral voice-over piece — unfold as a game of translation between worlds. They are currently developing FANTASMÁ, their first group piece.
Recipient of the Best Show Award at FITT Festival (Tarragona, 2020), their work has been presented in theaters and festivals across Europe, including Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, Teatro Municipal São Luiz (Lisbon, PT), BE Festival (Birmingham, UK), Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao, ES), and Batârd Festival (Brussels, BE).
They hold a BA in Design and an MA in Art from the Fine Arts schools of Toulouse and Nantes (FR), took part in the choreographic research program PEPCC at Forum Dança (Lisbon, PT), and are currently part of the NPP research program at Stockholm University of the Arts (SE).
Their work is produced by Le Vertige (FR) and supported by the production house O Rumo do Fumo (PT, 2023–2026)
