Biography

After training at ENMAD in Noisiel (Val de Marne), Tiphaine Raffier joined the 2nd class of the École du Nord in 2006. There she worked under the direction of Stuart Seide (notably in Quel est l’enfoiré qui a commencé le premier? by Dejan Dukovski). In 2010-2011, she worked with Bruno Buffoli and Laurent Hatat, then at the Théâtre du Prato with Gilles Defacque in Soirée de Gala (2013-2014). She has also appeared in plays by Julien Gosselin and the collective Si vous pouviez lécher mon cœur: Gênes 01 by Fausto Paravidino (2010), Tristesse Animal Noir by Anja Hilling (2011), Les Particules élémentaires by Michel Houellebecq (2013) and 2666 by Roberto Bolaño (2016). She will also be appearing in L’Adolescent by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, directed by Frank Castorf (Cologne, 2019). In 2020, she will join the cast of Les serpents directed by Jacques Vincey.

In 2012, at the Théâtre du Nord, Tiphaine Raffier wrote, directed, and starred in her first play, “La Chanson”. The production premiered at the first Festival Prémices in Lille. In 2014, as part of the third edition of the same festival, she premiered her second play, “Dans le nom”. In 2017, the play “France-Fantôme*”premiered. The show is still on tour in 2026. She directed a medium-length film based on her first play, “La Chanson”, a project supported by the CNC and presented in 2018 at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. Selected for some thirty festivals, it has won numerous awards. In 2020, Tiphaine Raffier wrote and directed “La réponse des Hommes”, whose first tour was postponed to the 21-22 season due to the pandemic. The show is still on tour in 2025 with more than 75 performance dates. In 2021, Tiphaine Raffier restaged “La Chanson (reboot)” with a new cast. She then created “Nemesis”, based on the novel by Philip Roth, at the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe in March 2023. This is her first adaptation of a novel for the stage, paired with an ambitious educational project featuring a different children’s choir in each city on the tour. In 2025, she directed her first opera, “Dialogues des Carmélites*”by Francis Poulenc, at the Opéra de Rouen.
Her most recent work, “L’hors-présence”, was created at the Festival d’Avignon 2026.

The scripts for his first three plays are published by La Fontaine, and the script for “La réponse des Hommes” is published by Avant-scène Théâtre. The script for “L’hors-présence”, published by Actes Sud-Papiers, will be released on October 26.

L’hors-présence

In a deserted village, Laure, terminally ill, returns home to die. Her two brothers and her sister join her to be with her in her final days. The siblings try to get organized, to establish routines, even as they struggle to put a name to the unnameable. They grapple with control, time, and language. But in the house across the street, someone seems to be watching them…
L’hors-présence is a play about the way we look at those who are dying. Who has the right to look, from what distance, and how? How can we look without judging? And what if what we call “the end of life” were actually the beginning of death—then when exactly would it begin? And when we watch a loved one die, what do we see? Their passing, our own, or that of humanity?
